Greetings one and all, Digital Minion here with a quick update.
It’s got cold. So cold that snow has been seen. And anyone in the Southern Region knows, snow is a problem… but its alright, we’ve got a VEP without any pesky computers to say it’s too cold – those big old shoes will just charge through anything – ice, snow… ah, simpler times…
(Wavy lines of reminiscing of being a young(er) Driver)
Anyhew, talking of pesky computers, back in the Summer we put together a proposal to help keep us in the 21st Century. Which is not normally a problem – Potter types with one finger and Bucky just smashes his mug of tea into the keyboard – but the shed dates from the end of the 19th century, and certainly wasn’t designed for Cat6 cabling and fibre optic links between comms cabinets!
So next week, the Shed is getting a lot of attention – additional CCTV, a new phone system, new desktop equipment and importantly, WiFi extended into the Shed, so we can do more stuff online. We have servers to install, backups to make – all stuff that is really, really boring and most people would dismiss as ‘not important’ – but without it we couldn’t continue to do all the fancy things with a blue train with many doors that everyone loves.
It’s not fancy, but it’s all essential work.. which *ahem* costs money. So with the snowy ‘festive’ season approaching, why not donate (https://www.setg.org.uk/donate/) or buy yourself or a loved one something nice… (https://www.setg.org.uk/store/)
Next week – many photos of cables going to interesting places and the Digital Minion installing IT ‘stuff’. There may be train photos and looks of horror from other Minions as they realise that ‘he does have half a clue what he’s doing….’
